Position summary

Ontario Health is seeking expressions of interest from surgeons for the position of Provincial Head, Surgical Oncology Program. This is a unique opportunity to provide strategic leadership as we work to drive quality, accountability and innovation in the cancer system. This opportunity is open to all qualified candidates including the incumbent.

Accountabilities

The key responsibilities of this position are:

  • Provide visionary leadership at the program and provincial level
  • Participate as an active member of OH’s Clinical Council and work collaboratively with other provincial clinical heads and cancer leads
  • Champion a strategic vision, goals and work plan for the Program
  • Conduct horizon and jurisdictional scanning to identify and prioritize issues
  • Oversee development implementation of organizational standards
  • Oversee and provide leadership towards system performance management, as it pertains to the Program
  • Provide oversight and strategic direction to funding model development, implementation and refinement
  • Lead and ensure accountability of system funding particulary in the future implementation of quality based procedure (QBP) funding of cancer surgery
  • Establish and maintain effective links with relevant clinical communities on behalf of OH
  • Identify and respond to system level issues
  • Provide supervisory and mentoring oversight to regional leads and provincial clinical advisors in conjunction with OH staff
  • May actively contribute to recruitment and performance management of program and project managers, clinical advisors and regional clinical leaders
  • Provide timely advice in response to Ministry, media and other requests for information related to the program or modality. Serve as a spokesperson on behalf of OH with media and/or Senior leaders
  • Support and advance collaboration among stakeholders
  • Lead the implementation of the Surgical Oncology objectives for the Ontario Cancer Plan, including working in conjunction with the Regional Cancer Programs to implement regional quality initiatives

Qualifications

  • Cancer surgeon currently practicing in Ontario in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) with a minimum of 10 years of experience
  • Significant clinical, research and teaching experience in surgical oncology
  • Proven track record of clinical leadership at the hospital and/or university level
  • Recognized as an opinion leader within the surgical oncology community
  • In-depth knowledge of clinical, administrative and system issues with respect to cancer services
  • Aptitude for systems thinking, ability to analyze information and to make sound decisions
  • Familiarity and knowledge of administrative data
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build consensus
  • Strong professional presence and ability to present to large and small audiences in a concise, articulate and dynamic fashion
  • Demonstrate commitment to patient-centred care, evidence-based medicine and public accountability
  • Enthusiasm for, and commitment to, quality improvement in cancer care at the systems level
  • Demonstrate creativity through publication of research and/or implementation of innovative systems and ideas
