Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus risk in Peel

EEEv is a rare but severe mosquito-borne illness with a high case fatality rate. Risk in Peel is very low because the primary vector, Culiseta melanura, is rarely found locally due to limited suitable woodland swamp habitat. No horses, mosquitoes, or humans in Peel have ever tested positive for EEEv. Areas of Ontario with suitable habitat, particularly cottage country and eastern regions, are more likely to have EEEv detected in mosquitos and horses in the late summer and early fall. The following vaccine safety resources, designed to support consistent and streamlined AEFI reporting by healthcare providers, have been updated: These changes reflect the updated Ministry of Health’s revised Infectious Disease Protocol, Appendix 1: Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFIs) (publication pending) and include: Health care providers should continue to report all AEFIs to TPH under the Health Protection and Promotion Act, using the updated AEFI Reporting Form and faxing the completed form to 416-696-3492 or emailing the completed form to [email protected]. ALERT: Temporary Changes to Rabies Post-exposure Prophylaxis (rPEP) Distribution Due to Shortage

Due to a shortage of rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin (RabIg) in Ontario, Peel Public Health and Toronto Public Health will be immediately and temporarily implementing measures to conserve the remaining supplies of each product. These measures are being taken to ensure that rabies vaccine and RabIg are available for high risk exposures, and to prolong our remaining stock until we receive resupply from the Ontario Ministry of Health (ministry). Toronto Public Health has shared a NEW video resource available to support student ISPA vaccination reporting to guide parents and students to complete the steps required to submit vaccination records to Toronto Public Health. Continuing outreach and promoting vaccine confidence can help families understand the need to report their vaccination records to TPH, which can help lower the number of students receiving letters from TPH in the fall. Changes to Pneumococcal High-Risk Paediatric Vaccine Program

On July 2nd, 2025, the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health shared a memorandum RE: the pneumococcal high risk paediatric program enhancement and the Health Care Provider Fact Sheet: Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines for Children Aged 6 Weeks to 17 Years.  Children aged 6 weeks to 17 years who are at high risk of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) who have completed their pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate (Pneu-C-13) immunization series are now eligible for one dose of the pneumococcal 20-valent conjugate (Pneu-C-20) vaccine.  Vaccine Orders: Questions: More information: Ministry of Health – Vaccine resources for professionals: Pneumococcal Vaccine Program

Updated Primary Care Provider Authorization Process at Regional Hospitals

To support earlier detection and diagnosis of breast cancer, as well as standardize the referral model across the Mississauga Halton Central West (MHCW) Region, an updated Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) referral model will be implemented in collaboration with collaboration with Halton Healthcare, Headwaters Health Care Centre, Trillium Health Partners and William Osler Health System. This new process aims to streamline patient navigation and expedite timely access to diagnostic services following an abnormal OBSP screen.
