West Nile virus risk in Peel

WNV has been present in Peel since 2001. Activity varies each year, largely influenced by weather conditions. Peel Public Health monitors WNV through 33 mosquito traps collected weekly from mid-June through September. In 2025, the first positive mosquito pools were detected in late July. Human cases in Ontario are most common between late July and September. For current provincial surveillance data, visit PHO Vector-borne Disease Tool. Transmission and clinical presentation WNV is transmitted to humans primarily through mosquito bites. The incubation period ranges from 2-15 days or up to 21 days in immunocompromised individuals. ALERT: Temporary Changes to Rabies Post-exposure Prophylaxis (rPEP) Distribution Due to Shortage

Due to a shortage of rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin (RabIg) in Ontario, Peel Public Health and Toronto Public Health will be immediately and temporarily implementing measures to conserve the remaining supplies of each product. These measures are being taken to ensure that rabies vaccine and RabIg are available for high risk exposures, and to prolong our remaining stock until we receive resupply from the Ontario Ministry of Health (ministry). Changes to Pneumococcal High-Risk Paediatric Vaccine Program

On July 2nd, 2025, the Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health shared a memorandum RE: the pneumococcal high risk paediatric program enhancement and the Health Care Provider Fact Sheet: Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines for Children Aged 6 Weeks to 17 Years.  Children aged 6 weeks to 17 years who are at high risk of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) who have completed their pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate (Pneu-C-13) immunization series are now eligible for one dose of the pneumococcal 20-valent conjugate (Pneu-C-20) vaccine.  Vaccine Orders: Questions: More information: Ministry of Health – Vaccine resources for professionals: Pneumococcal Vaccine Program

Updated Primary Care Provider Authorization Process at Regional Hospitals

To support earlier detection and diagnosis of breast cancer, as well as standardize the referral model across the Mississauga Halton Central West (MHCW) Region, an updated Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) referral model will be implemented in collaboration with collaboration with Halton Healthcare, Headwaters Health Care Centre, Trillium Health Partners and William Osler Health System. This new process aims to streamline patient navigation and expedite timely access to diagnostic services following an abnormal OBSP screen.

Osler’s Paediatric Infectious Disease Clinic Launch 

William Osler’s Women’s and Children’s Program is excited to announce the opening of the Paediatric Infectious Disease Clinic at Peel Memorial Centre on June 6, 2025. Through the clinic, they strive to improve patient health by providing inclusive, compassionate, and culturally safe care to patients through investigation, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and prevention of infectious diseases. Toronto Public Health’s Healthy Babies Healthy Children (HBHC) Home-Visiting Program

Toronto Public Health’s Healthy Babies Healthy Children (HBHC) home-visiting program has relaunched its Online Referral Form for Regulated Healthcare and Social Service Providers.
