Anticipated time commitment: Peer Physicians will be scheduled for equitable week days, week nights, weekends and holiday shifts. The majority are 12-hour shifts with some 6-hour shifts. Monthly shift commitment is between 24-48 hours

Term: 1 year with option to renew annually

Position summary

Ontario Health is seeking expressions of interest from Emergency Department physicians for the
positions of Peer Physician, Emergency Department (ED) Peer-to-Peer Program.

Ontario Health is dedicated to enhancing stability, integration, and support within Emergency Departments (EDs) across the province. To help achieve this, the ED Peer-to-Peer Program was developed to offer 24/7, on-demand clinical support, coaching, mentoring, and empowerment for ED physicians and ED nurse practitioners. Launched in October 2022, the program ensures that clinicians working in single-coverage EDs have access to peer support and a trusted colleague. Additionally, Peer Physicians provide Most Responsible Physician (MRP) surge support for patients at nursing stations affiliated with Sioux Lookout Region.

Reporting to the Medical Director, Emergency Department Peer-to-Peer Program, this role is critical in providing immediate and direct support to clinicians providing care in rural, remote and low-resourced emergency care settings across Ontario.

Qualifications

• Practicing physician in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, and either the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, with a CFPC “CAC-EM” or FRCP in Emergency Medicine credential.
• A minimum of five years of clinical experience in emergency medicine with significant component in rural, remote or low-resourced environments.
• Experience in a leadership role focused on quality and system improvement preferred.
• Expert knowledge of current best practices, healthcare literature, and evidence-based guidelines, as it pertains to emergency medicine.
• Demonstrated commitment to equitable and person-centred care, as well as public accountability.
• Experience in medical education, simulation or other relevant coaching scenarios is an asset.
• Must have access to a quiet, confidential space with computer/broadband access meeting specifications provided.
