PPH: Pneumococcal vaccine program updateThe routine pneumococcal immunization program for adults aged 65 years and older is transitioning from the pneumococcal 20-valent conjugate vaccine (Pneu-C-20, Prevnar 20) to the pneumococcal 21-valent conjugate vaccine (Pneu-C-21, Capvaxive). Pneu-C 20 (Prevnar 20) will continue to be available for individuals aged 6 weeks to 64 years of age at high risk for invasive pneumococcal disease. Eligibility for publicly funded pneumococcal vaccination remains unchanged. Publicly funded pneumococcal vaccines Three pneumococcal conjugate vaccines are now available through Ontario’s publicly funded immunization program. NEW: Vaccination Reminder Letters for Toronto Students in Grade 2Beginning July 2026, TPH is sending letters to parents/guardians of upcoming grade 2 students (born 2019) across all four Toronto school boards who are not up-to-date with their vaccines under the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) (approximately 15,000 students). Toronto health care providers should expect and plan for an increase in vaccination appointment requests from patients beginning in summer through fall 2026. The letters will instruct parents/guardians to either: Multiple notification letters will be sent and parents/guardians will have several months to comply before possible suspension from school. Toronto Public Health Student Immunization Clinics Available for Grade 2 StudentsToronto Public Health (TPH) has begun sending immunization reminder letters to parents and guardians of Grade 2 students (born in 2019) who are not up to date on their required vaccinations under Ontario’s Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA). As families begin receiving these notices, your patients may contact your office with questions about their child’s immunization status or to arrange any outstanding vaccinations. Pool of Mosquitoes in Toronto Test Positive for West Nile VirusOn July 16, 2026, TPH received confirmation that one batch of mosquitoes has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) in Toronto. In general, the first positive mosquito pool tends to coincide with the first transmissions of WNV to humans. Human Infection with WNV:• Most common in Toronto from July to end of September and can occur outside this time period.• While approximately 75% of human WNV infections are asymptomatic, most symptomatic patients present with a febrile illness characterized by headache, myalgia, arthralgia, gastrointestinal symptoms or a maculopapular rash.• People > 50 years of age and those who are immunocompromised are at increased risk of WNV neuroinvasive […] -

PPH: Candida auris colonization: Updated surveillance and reportingThe Ontario Ministry of Health is enhancing provincial surveillance for Candida auris (C. auris). While C. auris infection is already a disease of public health significance, this update expands surveillance to include C. auris colonization. From July 1 to December 31, 2026, public health units are required to report all cases of C. auris colonization to the Ministry of Health and Public Health Ontario. Health system partners are asked to support this effort by voluntarily reporting newly identified colonization cases to their local public health units.
